So when we heard talk about Sam’s bakery in Shekou we simply had to check it out. Located opposite Sihai Park, Sam’s was opened by Singaporean Serkiat Sim with the intention of selling coffee. The place still acts as a coffee shop of sorts. The beans are ordered fresh from Yunnan and roasted in house before three times filtered alkali water is added, creating the best smelling, best tasting Cup O’Joe in town. And surprisingly the coffee is relatively inexpensive with a Cappuccino or Latte going for RMB15/20 for small and large cups respectively. But it is the bread which really steals t...he show. Made with unbleached flour and all natural ingredients, Jonathan’s New York Bagel (4/bag RMB28) tasted like it had been flown directly from New York that day. The perfect constitution of the Baguette (RMB8) provoked me into buying some very expensive French cheese just to do the bread justice.
